Lexus charges ahead to record electrified share in 2024
Three out of four Lexus vehicles sold last year were electrified, as the brand consolidated its leadership of the hybrid luxury vehicle market.
Australians bought a record 10,164 electrified Lexus vehicles last year, bringing the brand’s overall sales total to 13,642 deliveries, the second highest result in its 35 years in Australia. Just two years ago the brand sold 7,089 vehicles, of which 3,280 were electrified.
As a result, the mix of sales attributable to HEV, PHEV and BEV powertrains accelerated to a new high of 74.5 per cent of total Lexus sales in 2024, up from 60.4 per cent in 2023 and 46.3 per cent in 2022.
The mid-size Lexus NX luxury SUV again led the way with 6,123 deliveries, of which 4,768 vehicles or 77.9 per cent were the electrified NX 350h or NX 450h+ grades. For the family-sized luxury RX, 80.7 per cent of sales were the petrol-electric 350h and 500h models.
Lexus Australia Chief Executive John Pappas said the luxury lifestyle brand was entering its 35th year in Australia, marking a significant milestone in its journey.
“From a disruptor brand with a niche line up, we have evolved into a fully established luxury lifestyle brand with an extensive portfolio of vehicles that includes BEVs, PHEV and hybrids,” Mr Pappas said.
“Our line up reflects our determination to adopt a multi-pathway approach on our journey towards electrification, ensuring that no customers are left behind,” he said.
“We’ve had a massive product renewal that has revitalised our brand and attracted new customers. In the past two years, we have launched five all-new or new-generation models including the rugged GX and compact LBX in 2024, plus LM, RX and our second BEV, RZ in 2023. We are proud of the fact that our line up offers something for everyone,” he said.
Mr Pappas said that while increased market share was gratifying, it was not a key measure of success for the brand.
“We’re about ensuring that every customer has an amazing ownership experience. If we are successful doing that, then the milestones will take care of themselves,” he said.
Mr Pappas said the popularity of Lexus hybrid vehicles vindicated the brand’s decision to be a petrol-electric pioneer in the luxury market.
“Lexus has led the way with this technology in the luxury market.”
Since the Lexus Electrified journey began in 2006 with the introduction of the world’s first luxury hybrid sedan and SUV in the GS 450h and RX 400h respectively, the luxury lifestyle brand has delivered 56,490 electrified vehicles in Australia.
The lower tailpipe emission powertrains are now preferred by the vast majority of Lexus customers across its most popular models.
Recent new-model introductions have also helped boost the electrified share in 2024, including 1,470 deliveries of the LBX luxury compact SUV – offered exclusively with a 1.6-litre hybrid powertrain – and 298 deliveries of the LM 350h and LM 500h luxury mover.
Plug-in hybrid deliveries are expected to increase in 2025 as Lexus reopens orders on the NX 450h+ and introduces the highly anticipated RX 450h+ later in the year.
